One minute you’re out for a casual walk in the park. The next, you’re lining up a shot, reading the wind, and hoping your disc flies exactly how you pictured it.
Sometimes it does.
Sometimes it absolutely does not.
And that’s part of what makes it great. Even when a throw goes sideways, it’s still a good day to be outside, moving your body, and trying again.
Matt Hoyos puts it simply: he’s a disc golfer. And with Hobby Discs, the goal is just as simple – help more people discover how fun disc golf really is.
Why Disc Golf Is So Easy to Get Into
Disc golf is easy to learn and endlessly interesting to improve at.
You don’t need a lot of equipment.
You don’t need perfect form.
You don’t need to be “athletic” to enjoy it.
You might need a willingness to laugh at yourself sometimes.
Because in disc golf:
- Some shots work out beautifully
- Some shots don’t
- And when they don’t… it’s alright
You throw, you learn, you adjust, and you throw again.
What Makes It So Enjoyable
One of the best things about disc golf is that it doesn’t feel like “exercise,” but it gives you a lot of the same benefits of traditional exercise and outdoor recreation.
Physically, you’re walking, throwing, and staying active without really thinking about it.
Mentally, you’re focused on each shot – picking a line, committing to it, and resetting after mistakes. It’s a great mental refresh when life feels too busy.
And maybe most importantly, you’re outside. Fresh air, open space, and time away from everything else.
The Quirky Side of Disc Golf
Disc golf has its own personality.
You’ll see players:
- Playing while holding discs or with their bag still on
- Taking lines you didn’t see
- Trying shots they probably shouldn’t… but sometimes pull off
It’s a little unconventional and that’s kind of the point.
Disc golf has always felt like an alternative to traditional sports – more relaxed, more creative, and a little more personal.
Everyone plays it their own way.
Starting with the Right Disc
When introducing someone new to disc golf, their first disc can make a big difference on correct form, distance, and whether they come back to play again.
Drivers can be tempting, but for beginners they often fade hard and don’t go as far because they need more speed and rotation to go the proper distance. Which is usually a challenge for newer players.
A putter can be ideal, but they are a little thicker and can be tricky to grip and feel bulky. They fly slower with a broader wind surface so the glide isn’t as exciting.
A straight midrange is different.
They don’t need as much speed as a driver to get their max distance and that max distance is surprisingly far and reachable for new players. A glidey mid can soar! And it will hook you when new players see success earlier.
And that early success is what makes people want to keep playing.
Introducing the Jollyroger
To create that kind of experience, Matt worked with the experts at Gateway Disc Sports to test different discs and found what we believe is the perfect disc for every bag.
The Jollyroger is now PDGA Approved.
A neutral, beginner-friendly midrange designed to be easy get that coveted “S” turn that’s so beautiful to watch. It’s the disc you hand anyone and say:
“Try this – you’ll like it.”
